Tutorial--Making a Word into A Heart on Silhouette Studio

Hey everyone! There have been a lot of requests for different words or names made into a heart on one of my Silhouette groups, so I thought I would do a quick tutorial. This is really my first Silhouette tutorial, so if you have any questions, please ask.

This is the heart I use. Find one that works well for you. I found that this one works better than trying to use a fancy heart.

I'm using the font Impact at size 144 to start. You can use other fonts, but I found this one easiest to get started with. After you've typed your word, ungroup all the letters. Do not release compound path as this will make the middles of your letters ungroup as well. Using ungroup will just ungroup the letters from each other.

Manipulate all the letters so they overlap the heart. I use the corner stretching and the top/bottom and side stretching. This takes a little adjusting. Don't worry about making sure all points over lap the heart at this time, we'll fix that next.

Duplicate your heart. Now you have the extra one and the one around your word.

Highlight your word and your original heart and then select crop from your modify tool box. You should get something that resembles the above picture. Then line up your duplicated heart so it lines up flush with the crop (I forgot to take a screen shot of this step).

Now zoom into your image and work through your letters. Double click on them so you are able to manipulate the points. Pull each letters points so they are flush with the heart. Like in the next picture.

I actually pull my points just past the heart and you'll see why in a second.

Okay, now you've got a big ol' mess that looks like this. I've also duplicated my heart again, just in case. You're going to highlight it all again and hit crop again.

And that's it. If you need to, you can drag your heart over and play with the points again to get the look you want. Like I said, if you have any questions, please message me. I hope this tutorial was easy to follow.

And if you're coming here looking to just purchase this done in vinyl, visit my facebook.

  1. What a great idea! I <3 it. :) Thank you for taking the time to post this. I have been trying to get myself to start a blog for months now. It's so much work! Much respect to those who actually get it done. Keep it up and best of luck!

  3. Total newbie here....trying to make a monogram similar to what you did above. When I hit "crop" it removes all the letters and leaves my circle. I've checked and everything overlaps, the letters are ungrouped, and both the circle and all the letters are selected. Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong? thanks!

    1. Hi Chris! Thank you for checking out my tutorial. I believe you have to have the circle as the background layer. Try clicking on the circle and selecting "Send to Back". Object<Arrange<Send to Back Let me know if that helped and if not I'll try to trouble shoot something else.

    2. thanks for getting back to me so quickly! I have tried with the circle at the back and at the front and get the same result. Ugh!

    3. One other thing...how do you know if your object is in the front or back? When I click the little icon to move to back or front nothing happens and I'm not sure how to know what my layers are?

    4. Are you using the crop option? You could check to make sure it's in the back by filling it with a color and then reselecting no fill when you see it's in the back.

    5. Did you end up getting this to work out for you?

    6. I was having the same problem even after sending my shape to the back. I just skipped that step and went on to adjusting the points around the shape.

    1. It took me a little while to learn. I saw a video that taught you how to make your own circle monogram and then someone posted a picture of Family shaped like a heart but done differently and I was bound and determined to make it work out for me. I'm glad you found it helpful. I'd like to do more tutorials in the future.

  6. This was fun to do. I kept switching between your pictures and the Silhouette software and was able to duplicate. My computer froze during the process and restarted itself. Glad Silhouette recovered my image. Looks great!

    1. You can do it with any shape! Just would have to do more playing with the shapes of the letters.

  11. Okay first, I'm new. To everything, your blog, the Silhouette, designing in the software. Everything... I am trying to do this heart with the grands names. I can get all the way up to cropping and that even works YAY! When I get it cropped I end up with a think black line from my heart on the edges of my letters. So my question would be do I need to worry about that or will the Silhouette cut the white shape and the black outline separate, or will it cut them together as just a letter. OR do I need to pull in the design points so that the black is "cut" off? Gosh that a lot to take in I know. I hope you can help me. Thanks bunches. Phyllis
